Looking Out For The Elderly

Milkmen warm to task of watching out for elderly customers during cold snap
Leicester dairy firm, Kirby and West have been keeping a close eye on their elderly customers over the winter months as temperatures continue to drop.
As Leicester finds itself in the icy grip of the current cold snap the friendly service provided by Kirby and West's delivery staff offers a lifeline to many elderly people across the city. Out and about on their rounds, Kirby and West's delivery workers are ensuring that customers receive a delivery of essential products such as milk, bread, eggs and cheese every morning.
For many elderly customers the meet and greet of the Kirby and West roundsmen offers a reassuring contact with the outside world, at a time when isolation can be as great a danger as the cold weather itself. Kirby and West's dedicated team are available to check in on customers, make sure they are warm and well and have all the essentials required to get through the harsh winter weather.
Milkman Richard Revell, 37, who has worked for Kirby and West for eight years, said: "Approximately 20% of our 30,000 customers are elderly and when delivering to them every day, you get to know them pretty well."
"This time of year can be very lonely for the elderly and so delivering their goods with a friendly face each morning makes a big difference. It is also very reassuring for their relatives to know that not only are they being provided with the basics, but someone is there to check on them regularly."
Mrs Amy Pegg, an 88 year old customer from Thurmaston said: "Richard is very friendly and he always checks in on me to make sure I am all right. We have a chat and he tells me about his family and things like his holidays. It's good to see a friendly face and he always gets the milk delivered whatever the weather."
